The air in Elder Maeve’s hidden sanctuary, usually thick with the scent of drying herbs and ancient parchment, now pulsed with a different kind of energy. It was a frantic hum, like a trapped bee buzzing against a windowpane, mirroring the turmoil inside me. Maeve lay frail on her cot, her breath shallow, her eyes, once like chips of polished obsidian, now clouded with a pain that had nothing to do with physical wounds. The Valpyr’s tendrils, Silas had revealed, had latched onto her, feeding on the regret of a choice made long ago, a choice that had fractured our world.
“Anya,” she rasped, her voice a dry whisper, “you must understand. The parfaits… they are not just food. They are anchors. Anchors for the Valpyr, drawing the world’s sorrow into them, making it palatable, making it… normal.”
I knelt by her side, my hands trembling as I reached for hers. Her skin felt cool, papery. “But how, Maeve? How can something so sweet be so… wrong?”
