Fueled by Maeve's actions and her own determination, Anya finds a hidden resilience within herself, learning to resist the Valpyr's whispers.
The silence in Elder Maeve's small cottage was heavier than any sound. It pressed in on me, a thick blanket woven from sorrow and the lingering scent of herbs. Maeve lay still, her breathing shallow, her eyes closed. The light that usually danced within them had flickered out, leaving only a soft, gentle glow, like embers fading after a fire. She had done it. She had taken the brunt of the Valpyr's attack, shielding me with her own life force. Guilt, sharp and icy, pierced through me. This was my fault. My curiosity, my clumsy search for answers, had led us here.
I knelt beside her, my fingers tracing the worn fabric of her shawl. The world outside, the world I had desperately tried to understand, suddenly felt distant, a hazy dream. All that mattered was this quiet room, this fading light. But then, a faint tremor ran through Maeve’s hand. Her eyelids fluttered.
“Anya…” her voice was a mere whisper, a dry rustle of leaves.
