Anya confronts Silas, forcing him to reveal his motivations and his connection to the Valpyr, leading to a tense and emotional showdown.
The air in Silas’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and something else, something cloying and sweet that reminded me unpleasantly of overripe fruit. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the quiet hum of the room. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in my mind, a steady anchor in the storm of my own fear: Trust your gut, Anya. Sometimes, the sweetest things hide the sharpest thorns. I’d thought Silas was a friend, a guide in this bewildering new world. But the whispers, the strange unease that clung to him like a second skin, had finally set me on edge. And then there were the parfaits. The blueberry parfaits, so innocent, so… wrong.
“Silas,” I began, my voice trembling slightly, “we need to talk.”
He looked up from a stack of ancient-looking scrolls, his smile easy, disarming. “Anya! To what do I owe this unexpected visit? Come, sit. You look as though you’ve seen a ghost.” He gestured to a plush velvet chair, but I remained standing, my gaze fixed on him.
