The air in my tiny room felt thick, heavy with unspoken fears and the lingering sweetness of regret. Outside, the usual hum of the city was muted, a low thrum of anxiety that had settled over everything since the 11/11 Awakening. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in my mind, a steady current beneath the choppy surface of my thoughts: "The Valpyr feeds on what is left behind, Anya. On the moments we wish we could unmake." And those blueberry parfaits, those innocent swirls of cream and fruit, were a constant reminder of all the things I wished I could unmake.

I traced the condensation on the glass of water beside my bed. The parfaits. They weren't just desserts anymore. They were a conduit. She said the Valpyr was a creature of shadow and sorrow, born from a time when the world couldn't bear its own pain. It thrived on the whispers of 'if only,' on the gnawing certainty that we could have, should have, done better. And the parfaits, with their deceptively simple sweetness, were the perfect bait. They lulled us into a false sense of security, then served up a heaping spoonful of our own failures.
