The air in Viktor’s cramped apartment, usually thick with the scent of old paper and stale coffee, now hummed with a different kind of tension, a nervous energy that crackled between Anya and him. The single bulb overhead cast long, dancing shadows, making the piles of documents and cryptic notes scattered across the table seem even more formidable. They had spent hours poring over them, piecing together fragments of Darius Kovacs’s illicit empire, but the final, undeniable proof, the keystone that would bring the whole edifice crashing down, remained elusive.
“It has to be here,” Anya murmured, her brow furrowed as she traced a line on a faded shipping manifest. “The numbers don’t add up. So many discrepancies, so many phantom shipments. He’s moving something significant, Viktor. Something more than just trinkets and counterfeit electronics.”
Viktor leaned back, the springs of his worn armchair groaning in protest. His eyes, usually sharp and assessing, were shadowed with fatigue, but a flicker of determination remained. “The Weaver is meticulous, Anya. He doesn’t leave trails of breadcrumbs. He weaves them into the fabric of the operation itself. If it’s not in the numbers, it’s in the methods.” He gestured to a small, tarnished silver locket lying on the table, one of the many items Anya had found in the initial package. “That locket, for instance. Seemingly innocuous. But the inscription inside…”
