Chapter 11
Constructed Reality
Evidence mounts that the deeper levels are deliberately constructed. Alex finds anomalies suggesting purpose and design, not just random, dangerous environments. The Backrooms feel like a vast, intricate experiment.
The fluorescent hum was a constant, a low-grade fever of the air, and it seemed to vibrate not just in Alex’s ears but in the very marrow of their bones. They traced a damp stain on the wall, a Rorschach of some indeterminate liquid that might have once been water, or something far less benign. Level 0 had been a relentless, monotonous expanse of yellow and beige, a sensory deprivation chamber masquerading as a physical space. But Level 1, that was different. Kai, ever the eager explorer, had plunged through without a second thought, Maya’s exasperated sigh a familiar sound in their wake. Alex, their heart a frantic bird against their ribs, had followed, Silas’s sneering goodbye a distant, irritating buzz.
Now, days – or perhaps weeks, time had become a fluid, unreliable thing – into Level 1, the unsettling feeling had solidified into a gnawing certainty. This wasn’t just a random extension of the void. There were patterns here, subtle yet undeniable, that spoke of intention.
