Gathering her newfound courage, Fifi confronts Aunt Mildred. Her voice, though soft, carries the weight of her parents' legacy and her own inner strength. She stands tall, no longer a victim of neglect.
The storm outside had finally quieted, leaving behind a world washed clean and glistening. But inside, a different kind of tempest was brewing, one that had been gathering force within me for weeks, for months, for what felt like my entire young life. Today, it was ready to break. Aunt Mildred was in the parlor, as usual, her nose buried in a society magazine, her lips pursed in a perpetual state of disapproval. The air in the room felt thick with her unspoken judgments, a familiar heaviness that usually made me shrink. But not today. Today, the words of my parents, carried on the wind and whispered by the ancient trees in the garden, echoed in my heart, a melody of love and strength I couldn't ignore.
I took a deep breath, the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine from the garden still clinging to my clothes, a comforting reminder of where I’d found my courage. My hands, usually trembling when I had to speak to her, were steady. I walked into the parlor, my footsteps surprisingly firm on the polished floorboards. Aunt Mildred didn't even look up, just let out a soft sigh of impatience.
“Fifi, what is it now? Can’t you see I’m occupied?” Her voice was as dry and brittle as autumn leaves.
