Chapter 6
A Message from the Past
During the height of the storm, a gust of wind reveals a hidden alcove in the garden. Inside, Fifi finds a locket and a letter, a secret message from her beloved parents, speaking of love and a hidden legacy.
The wind howled like a mournful ghost, rattling the windowpanes of Aunt Mildred’s house. Rain lashed against the glass, each drop a tiny fist pounding a rhythm of despair. I huddled closer to the hearth, the dying embers offering little warmth against the chill that had settled deep in my bones, a chill that had nothing to do with the weather and everything to do with the gnawing sickness that had taken root within me. Aunt Mildred had been more impatient than usual, her sighs growing louder with each rasp of my breath, her pronouncements about my weakness sharper than the wind’s shriek. She’d dismissed my coughs as mere theatrics, my pale face as a wilful attempt to shirk chores. But the ache in my chest, the dizzy spells that stole my balance, they were all too real.
My only escape, my only true solace, was the garden. Even in the tempest, its allure beckoned. I knew I shouldn’t, not with this fever clinging to me, but the urge was too strong to resist. Slipping out of bed, I pulled on my sturdiest boots and a thick shawl, the familiar scent of damp earth and hidden blossoms a comfort even as the storm raged outside. The garden gate groaned in protest as I pushed it open, a symphony of creaking hinges and whistling wind. The wind, though violent, seemed to guide me, pushing me deeper into the overgrown haven. Branches whipped around me, leaves swirled like frantic dancers, and the rain plastered my hair to my face, but I pressed on.
It was then, amidst the thrashing of a particularly ancient oak, that I saw it. A gust, fiercer than the rest, tore through the trees, revealing a section of the stone wall I’d never noticed before. It was as if the wind itself had ripped away a veil, exposing a small, shadowed alcove, almost perfectly concealed by ivy and gnarled roots. My heart gave a sudden, hopeful leap. This was new. This was a secret within a secret. My parents, I remembered, had loved to surprise me with hidden nooks and crannies, little pockets of wonder tucked away in the world.
