Chapter 8
Midnight Brews
Under the cloak of night, Anya experiments with her alchemical knowledge. She attempts a difficult potion, hoping to glean more information about her father's condition.
The velvet cloak of night draped itself over Eldoria, muffling the boisterous pre-wedding festivities that still echoed faintly from the castle halls. Anya, cloaked in shadows and a borrowed servant’s tunic, slipped through the deserted corridors. The heavy brocade of her formal gowns felt like a prison, a constant reminder of the gilded cage she inhabited. Tonight, however, she was free, a ghost in her own home, guided by the faint glow of a single, hooded lantern.
Her destination was a forgotten wing of the castle, a place rumored to be haunted, a place where even the most seasoned guards dared not tread after dusk. It was here, tucked away behind a tapestry depicting a forgotten battle, that she had discovered the alchemist’s hidden laboratory. The air within was thick with the scent of dried herbs, acrid fumes, and something indefinably ancient, a fragrance that both repelled and captivated her. Dust motes danced in the lantern’s beam, illuminating shelves lined with an assortment of vials, alembics, and peculiar instruments.
Anya set down her lantern on a scarred wooden workbench. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird desperate for escape. The alchemist’s journal lay open, its brittle pages filled with elegant script and intricate diagrams. Tonight, she was attempting something far more complex than the simple tinctures she’d practiced in secret. The journal, under the chapter titled “The Weaver’s Sight,” described a potion meant to reveal subtle truths, to peel back the layers of deception and illness. It was a long shot, a desperate gamble, but her father’s pallor, the hushed conversations of physicians, and the unnerving stillness that had settled over him in recent weeks gnawed at her.
