Chapter 6: The One Who Asks
A stranger arrives at the workshop entrance, a woman with sharp eyes and a methodical purpose. She introduces herself as Sera, a cartographer who has been tracking the same ley-line disturbances as Corbin. Her questions cut through the group's careful evasions, and her observations reveal that someone among them has been holding back a crucial piece of information.
The climb back up the spiral staircase took longer than the descent. Every step felt heavier, as if the pulse from the crystal chamber had wrapped itself around their ankles. Leo's legs ached. His lantern hand trembled. But he kept climbing because Elias kept climbing, and Elias looked like he might shatter if he had to do it alone.
They emerged into the oak-planked corridor, then the shadowy workshop, then the ground door that opened onto twilight. The sun had set while they were below. The sky was a deep bruised purple, and the first stars were pricking through.
Corbin stretched his arms over his head. "We need a proper base camp. Food. Maps. A plan."
