The air in the Whispering Woods was thick, not with the scent of pine and damp earth, but with an invisible chill that seeped into their very bones. Sunlight, once a comforting presence, now filtered through the dense canopy in fractured, sickly green shafts, illuminating dancing motes of dust that seemed to writhe like tiny, tormented spirits. Bianca hugged her arms tighter, the thin fabric of her school uniform offering no defense against the palpable unease that clung to the trees like cobwebs. Beside her, Liam stumbled, his usual boisterous energy subdued, replaced by a wide-eyed apprehension.
"This place gives me the creeps, Bianca," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper, as if afraid to disturb the silence.
Bianca nodded, her gaze sweeping across the gnarled, ancient trunks that loomed like skeletal sentinels. The trees themselves seemed to groan, their branches twisted into macabre shapes, resembling reaching claws or contorted faces. And then there were the whispers. Not the rustling of leaves, but faint, disembodied voices, slithering into their ears like icy tendrils. They spoke in a language they couldn’t understand, yet the sorrow, the fear, the sheer agony woven into their spectral murmurs, was a universal tongue.
