The prince’s chambers were a sanctuary of hushed elegance, a stark contrast to the clamor of the city and the gnawing fear that had become Bianca’s constant companion. Moonlight, filtered through panes of intricately carved crystal, dappled the silken rugs and cast long, dancing shadows. He sat opposite her, his gaze, usually alight with a gentle warmth, now held a profound somberness. The air between them was thick with unspoken anxieties, a palpable weight that pressed down on Bianca’s chest.
“You asked to understand,” he began, his voice a low murmur, like pebbles smoothed by a ceaseless tide. “But understanding often comes with a burden, Bianca. A weight of knowledge that can crush the spirit.”
Bianca nodded, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs. She had come seeking answers, but the answers, she was beginning to realize, were not always easy to bear. “I need to know,” she insisted, her voice steadier than she felt. “I need to know why we are here, why that… thing… hunts us, and why you seem to know so much about me, about us.”
