Chapter 27
The Web of Illusion
Adam, Ally, and the family push deeper into the Valley of Whispers after the Silent One's disappearance. A trap opens a chasm and a wall of violet flame, separating Adam and Ally from the others. They are led into a clearing with standing stones where a grey-robed woman and hooded figures attack. Exhausted, Adam drops his staff and is caught in an illusion of his family dying and Ally being tortured. He succumbs to despair until Ally intervenes, freezing time and breaking the illusion. Together they destroy the grey woman and reunite with Kael, David, and Eve. The family advances toward the central stone circle.
The mist settled around them, thick and whispering. Adam kept his staff raised, the golden light pulsing faintly. The Valley of Whispers had gone quiet—no wind, no birds, only the soft rustle of the fog.
“He’s gone,” Kael said, scanning the hills. “For now.”
Eve’s silver eyes narrowed. “He will not stay gone. We must move deeper into the valley. The Gathering site is near the central stone circle. If any other princes are alive, they will be drawn there.”
