After fainting from exhaustion and abuse, Ama finally confides in Miss Adjoa. The teacher contacts Social Welfare, leading to an investigation and Ama's placement in a safe children's home.
The next morning dawned grey and heavy, mirroring the ache in Ama’s bones. She’d barely slept, the rough mat beneath her offering little comfort against the damp chill that seeped from the walls. Every muscle protested as she pushed herself up, the gnawing emptiness in her stomach a familiar companion. The sun, a pale disc behind a veil of clouds, seemed to mock her with its slow ascent. Today felt different, though. A fragile hope, nurtured by Miss Adjoa’s quiet kindness, flickered within her.
School was a blur of hushed whispers and averted gazes. Ama tried to focus on the chalk dust dancing in the shafts of weak sunlight, on the rhythmic scratch of pencils, but her head felt thick, her vision swimming. Miss Adjoa’s voice, usually so clear and encouraging, seemed distant, like a song heard from across a wide river. During break, while the other children chased each other across the dusty field, Ama found a quiet corner beneath the shade of a mango tree, her small, worn diary clutched tightly in her hand. She opened it to a fresh page, her mother’s familiar script a balm to her weary spirit.
_Dear Diary,_ she began, her pencil scratching hesitantly, _Today my head hurts. My tummy is empty. Auntie Grace said I must work harder or she will not give me food. Miss Adjoa looked at me today. She looked like she saw me. I am so tired._
