The air in the grand foyer, once thick with the scent of decay and forgotten lives, now seemed to thrum with a new, unsettling energy. Gabe, his face pale beneath the flickering beam of his flashlight, stumbled back, his breath catching in his throat. The oppressive silence that had settled after their frantic dash from the spectral children was a fragile thing, and he felt it shattering around him. He clutched his worn notebook, its pages filled with scribbled theories and hopeful observations, as if it were a shield.

“It’s… it’s like before,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. Joe, ever the pragmatist, was already examining the intricate, dust-laden tapestry that depicted a scene of somber revelry. He glanced at Gabe, his brow furrowed with concern.

“Before what, Gabe? You’re acting like you’ve seen a ghost.” Joe’s tone was laced with his usual sarcasm, but underneath, a thread of genuine worry was beginning to fray his skepticism.
