The air in the grand hall of Blackwood Manor hung thick and heavy, a tangible shroud that clung to Al like a damp, icy cloak. Each breath he took felt shallow, insufficient, as if the very atmosphere was leached of life. Thomas, ever the instigator, was a few paces ahead, his flashlight beam dancing across the peeling wallpaper, a grotesque kaleidoscope of faded roses and forgotten lives.
