Chapter 9
Kaito learns that an imperial delegation is arriving the next day to escort him to the capital, forcing him to choose between compliance and facing the demon lord on his own terms. After a tense day of preparation and a confrontation with the delegation's captain, Kaito sneaks out at night to meet the demon lord alone, only to find his adversary waiting early for a test.
The morning sun did little to warm the camp. Kaito stood outside his tent, watching soldiers scramble to repair fortifications and tend to the wounded. The commotion Ren had woken him for was still buzzing through every corner of the encampment: an imperial delegation was coming. Tomorrow. The same day the demon lord promised to return at dawn.
“This is a disaster,” Hikari said, appearing at his side with a cup of lukewarm tea she pressed into his hands. “They’re going to take you away just when we need you most.”
“Or they’ll get me killed in a carriage before the demon lord has a chance,” Kaito muttered, taking a sip. The tea was bitter, but it grounded him.
