Chapter 4
The Importance of a Spark
As Sternchen guided the firefly, it saw how its own small light cut through the darkness, making a real difference. The firefly followed, no longer afraid. Sternchen realized its light, though small, was important and could bring comfort.
Sternchen watched as the little firefly, its tiny wings a blur of panicked movement, tumbled through the inky expanse. The firefly’s own light, usually a cheerful, intermittent pulse, now seemed to flicker with a desperate, fearful rhythm. It was so small, so utterly alone in the vastness. Sternchen’s own light, a gentle, almost shy glow, felt impossibly distant from the firefly’s plight, and yet, a strange tug pulled at its core.
The other stars, the magnificent, blazing ones, continued their silent, grand dance. They were like celestial bonfires, their light so powerful it seemed to carve canyons into the night. Sternchen felt a familiar pang of inadequacy. What could its own faint shimmer possibly do against such overwhelming brilliance? It was like a single dewdrop trying to illuminate a mountain. Yet, the firefly’s distress was a tangible thing, a small, trembling beacon of fear that Sternchen couldn’t ignore.
Hesitantly, almost imperceptibly at first, Sternchen nudged its light outwards. It wasn’t a grand gesture, no sudden burst of radiance. It was more of a gentle offering, a soft glow that expanded just enough to create a small pool of warmth in the surrounding darkness. The firefly, disoriented and lost, seemed to sense the subtle shift. It veered, its frantic flight path wavering, and then, as if drawn by an invisible thread, began to move towards Sternchen’s soft luminescence.
