The chipped ceramic mug felt cool in my hands, a stark contrast to the warmth that bloomed in my chest. It was a small thing, really, a spilled coffee incident in the quiet hum of the library café. The kind of clumsy mishap that usually sent me spiraling into a silent, internal panic, a frantic search for the nearest escape route. But today, it was different. Today, Nathaniel was there.

He’d been reading across from me, his brow furrowed in concentration over some thick tome, when the inevitable happened. My elbow, a traitorous appendage, nudged my latte, sending a tidal wave of milky brown cascading over the polished wood table and a good portion of my worn copy of *Wuthering Heights*. A mortified gasp escaped me. My cheeks flushed a deep, embarrassing crimson. My mind, a well-rehearsed orchestra of disaster, began to play its familiar symphony of self-recrimination. *See? You can’t even hold a cup. You’re a liability. You’re going to ruin everything.*

Before I could even begin to gather the scattered napkins, before the usual wave of shame could fully engulf me, Nathaniel was there. He didn't flinch. He didn't offer that saccharine, pitying smile that always made me feel even smaller. Instead, he simply stood, his chair scraping softly against the floor, and reached for a fresh roll of paper towels from the dispenser.
