The air in the presidential palace conference room hung thick and heavy, a palpable manifestation of the nation’s anxieties. Dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight slicing through the tall, arched windows, illuminating the grim faces of the ministers gathered around the polished mahogany table. Outside, the cacophony of Juba’s morning traffic, a symphony of honking boda-bodas and rumbling lorries, seemed a distant, irrelevant hum. Inside, the only sound was the rustle of papers and the occasional clearing of a throat.

Minister Kuol, his usually jovial face etched with lines of fatigue, gripped the edges of his report. His voice, usually booming, was a strained murmur as he presented the latest figures. “Inflation, Your Excellency, has breached three hundred percent. The South Sudanese Pound… it is little more than paper.” A collective sigh, hushed but heavy, rippled through the room. Each number he uttered was a fresh wound, a new testament to the erosion of their young nation’s dreams. The foreign currency reserves were depleted, the national debt a monstrous, unyielding beast, its shadow lengthening over every aspect of their lives.

President Machar, his gaze fixed on the ornate ceiling, slowly lowered his eyes to meet Kuol’s. His face, a landscape of weathered determination, betrayed a weariness that seeped into his very bones. “And the oil? Has the international market offered any respite?”
