Chapter 6
Chapter 7: The Old Woman's Threshold
Yoshua, Kathleen, and Kaelen travel east to the mountains in search of an old Keeper who may know how to restore the seal on the fissure. They find a remote cabin where an elderly woman, Elara, awaits them. She tests Yoshua's resolve, reveals the nature of the fissure as a wound from an ancient betrayal, and agrees to guide them if Yoshua can prove his worth by facing a trial in a grove of whispering pines. The chapter ends with Yoshua stepping into the grove, the resonance pulsing around him.
Dawn broke over the Whispering Pines, painting the sky in shades of amber and rose. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and pine needles, and the resonance hummed softly beneath Yoshua's skin like a second heartbeat. He stood on the porch, watching the light creep across the forest floor, his mind churning with the weight of what lay ahead.
Kathleen emerged behind him, her boots soft on the wooden planks. She carried a small pack and a canteen, her hair tied back, her eyes clear despite the sleepless night. "Kaelen's ready," she said. "He's checking the trail."
Yoshua nodded. The fire had burned to ash hours ago, and he had spent the remaining darkness sitting by the window, listening to the distant hum of the fissure. It was fainter now, but no less urgent, a low thrum that seemed to vibrate through the bones of the earth.
