The road to the Whispering Pines was a ribbon of gravel and memory, winding through stands of old-growth trees that leaned toward one another as if sharing secrets. Yoshua walked beside Kathleen, their footsteps crunching in unison, the resonance humming a quiet counterpoint beneath the rhythm of his heart. The sun climbed overhead, casting dappled light through the canopy, and the world felt suspended—caught between the peace they had found and the unknown that waited beyond the next bend.
Kathleen carried a small pack Kaelen had left for them, its weight modest but reassuring. She moved with a steadiness that Yoshua admired, her gaze fixed ahead, her hand occasionally brushing his. Each touch was a reminder that they were not alone, that the fragile bond they had forged was strong enough to hold against the growing distance between them and safety.
"How much farther?" she asked, her voice soft against the rustle of leaves.
