Though free, the sisters carry the sorrow of their past. The trauma has marked them, but it has also forged an unbreakable bond and a quiet strength within them.
The air outside was a balm, a stark contrast to the suffocating stillness that had clung to us within those walls for so long. It tasted of rain-washed earth and the promise of a new dawn, a scent so foreign it made my lungs ache with a relief I hadn’t known I possessed. Sahara walked beside me, her small hand a fragile anchor in mine. Her eyes, usually so wide with fear, held a new, quiet depth, a reflection of the storm we had weathered. We didn’t speak, not then. The words felt too heavy, too fragile to break the silence that had been our sanctuary.
The road was a ribbon of grey, unspooling before us, leading away from the house that had been both prison and tomb. Each step was a deliberate act of defiance, a silent scream against the years of whispered threats and chilling glances. My own feet felt lighter than they had in years, yet an invisible weight still pressed down on my shoulders, the phantom burden of a past I could not simply shed. This freedom, bought at such a terrible price, was a raw wound, still weeping.
We had left everything behind. The faded photographs, the worn furniture that held the echoes of laughter and sorrow, the very scent of dust and decay – all surrendered to the silence of the house. It felt right, somehow, to sever those ties, to let the past remain a ghost in its own domain. But ghosts, I was learning, were not so easily dismissed. They clung to the edges of our vision, whispered in the quiet moments, and left their indelible marks on the soul.
