The locket felt cool against my palm, a stark contrast to the tremor that ran through my fingers. It wasn’t just brass and glass anymore; it was a vessel, a silent witness to a love that had somehow defied the suffocating darkness of Aunt Elara’s home. Mother’s face, forever young and smiling within its confines, seemed to radiate a warmth that had been absent from our lives for so long. The vague unease that had gnawed at me for years, the gnawing suspicion that something was terribly wrong, had coalesced into a chilling certainty. Father wasn’t lost; he was taken. And the hand that had taken him was the one that had always pretended to care for us.
