The gentle hum of the laboratory was Sirijus’s lullaby, a constant companion to his late-night musings. Tonight, however, the usual comfort felt… off. A faint, almost imperceptible tremor had rippled through the meticulously organized shelves of beakers and the precise lines of his whiteboard diagrams. It wasn't the kind of shake that rattled the windows or sent papers skittering; it was deeper, subtler, like a sigh from the very bones of the building. Sirijus, usually lost in the dance of subatomic particles or the elegant ballet of biological pathways, found his attention snagged. He paused, his pen hovering over a complex equation describing cellular respiration. Had he imagined it? He tilted his head, listening. Only the familiar, soothing drone of the ventilation system answered. Yet, a tiny seed of unease, a speck of doubt, had been planted.

He stood, his long limbs unfolding with a quiet grace that belied his internal restlessness. He walked to the large window that overlooked the sleeping city, its lights twinkling like scattered constellations. The market data, a vibrant, chaotic tapestry of rising and falling digital assets, usually provided a fascinating parallel to his bio-physical theories. Today, however, the flickering lines on his secondary monitor seemed to mirror the disquiet within him. A sudden, sharp dip in one currency, followed by an equally abrupt surge in another – it was a jolt, a disruption in the expected flow. Was the universe, like this market, capable of such sudden, illogical shifts?

He remembered the brief, bewildering incident from earlier that day. He had been observing a petri dish, a simple culture of bacteria, when for a fleeting moment, the colonies seemed to… rearrange themselves. Not a gradual growth, but a distinct, almost deliberate shift, as if tiny hands had nudged them into a new configuration. He had blinked, rubbed his eyes, and when he looked again, they were back to their usual, predictable spread. He had dismissed it as fatigue, a trick of the light, a momentary lapse in his own perception. But now, with the tremor and the market’s erratic behavior, that dismissal felt thin, fragile.
