Kael's Shift

Kael watched Sirijus, really watched him, for the first time since their strange journey had begun. They were resting by a gurgling stream, the water so clear Kael could count the smooth pebbles on its bed. Sirijus was sketching furiously in his notebook, his brow furrowed in concentration. Elara sat nearby, her gaze serene as she watched a dragonfly hover over a patch of wild mint. Kael, meanwhile, was sharpening a sturdy stick with his knife, a habit born of a lifetime of needing to be prepared.
