The air in Oakhaven had always carried the scent of woodsmoke and damp earth, a comforting aroma Elara had associated with quiet evenings and the gentle rhythm of life. Tonight, however, the air crackled with something else – a potent blend of anticipation and relief. Torches, once symbols of the Usurper’s oppressive patrols, now blazed with the colours of the Lion banner, their flames dancing a triumphant jig against the bruised twilight sky. Oakhaven was free.

Elara stood on the makeshift platform overlooking the town square, the rough-hewn wood surprisingly solid beneath her worn boots. The cheers of the townsfolk, a wave of pure, unadulterated joy, washed over her, a stark contrast to the hushed whispers and fearful glances that had once defined her interactions with them. Beside her, Kaelen’s presence was a solid, reassuring weight, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his sword, his gaze sweeping the crowd with a vigilance that never faltered. Queen Lyra, her silver hair catching the torchlight like a halo, stood a little apart, her eyes, though shadowed with the weariness of years, held a spark of fierce pride.

Just hours ago, Oakhaven had been a town held captive by fear. The Usurper’s men, their faces hard and indifferent, had patrolled the cobbled streets, their heavy boots echoing the heavy hand of their master. Supplies were meagre, spirits lower still, and the very air seemed to press down on the inhabitants, stifling any flicker of defiance. But Elara, with Kaelen’s strategic brilliance and the courage of the few brave souls who had risked everything, had changed that.
