The air in Ethan's room felt thick, not with dust or neglect, but with the lingering scent of something that had been meticulously scrubbed away, yet refused to entirely vanish. Sunlight, usually a cheerful intrusion, seemed to filter through the window with a muted hesitancy, as if unsure of its welcome. It had been weeks since the woods had spat them back out, weeks since the earth had sealed its terrible secret, weeks since the chilling whispers had finally fallen silent. Life, they had all agreed, was attempting its clumsy, familiar return.

Ethan sat at his desk, the wood smooth and cool beneath his fingertips. He traced the grain, a silent ritual, his gaze fixed on the framed photograph of the four of them, taken just before the camping trip. Liam’s arm was slung around Maya’s shoulders, a comfortable, easy embrace. Maya was laughing, her eyes crinkling at the corners. Ethan and Liam were grinning, their faces flushed with the easy camaraderie of youth. It felt like a lifetime ago, a photograph of strangers who had once been them. He was more withdrawn now, a subtle shift that Maya had noticed immediately, and Liam, bless his anxious heart, had tried to ignore. Ethan found himself dissecting every interaction, every stray thought, searching for any residual tremor of what had happened. The woods, a place that had once represented freedom and adventure, now sat on the edge of his vision, a dark, silent promise of what lay beyond the mundane. He found himself glancing towards them, a habit that had become as ingrained as breathing.

Liam’s anxiety, on the other hand, had bloomed into a full-blown, thorny vine. He threw himself into his usual routine with a desperate ferocity, his athletic prowess a shield against the encroaching shadows. He’d started running longer, harder, pushing his body to its limits as if to outrun the memories. But the nightmares persisted, deeper and more vivid than before. He’d wake in a cold sweat, his heart hammering against his ribs, the phantom sensation of being pursued clinging to him like damp grave dirt. He hadn’t told Ethan or Maya about the nightmares, not really. He’d brushed them off as stress, as lingering trauma from their ordeal. But he knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that they were more than just bad dreams. They were echoes. He found himself constantly looking over his shoulder, his easygoing nature replaced by a hyper-vigilance that made his friends uneasy. He’d catch Maya’s concerned gaze, Ethan’s questioning look, and he’d force a smile, a hollow imitation of his former self.
