Chapter 18
The Lingering Shadows
The immediate threat is gone, but the experience has left scars. The friends are changed, forever bound by their shared trauma. Unease lingers, a reminder of the darkness they faced.
The air in Ethan's small apartment still hummed with an unnatural stillness, a quiet that felt heavier than any silence he'd ever known. It had been weeks since the blinding flash, the guttural roar, and the chilling echo that had finally faded from their lives. Weeks since the infernal entity, stripped of its vessel and its power, had been forced back into the suffocating confines of the artifact, now a dull, inert lump of obsidian that sat locked away in a specially reinforced safe deposit box. The immediate terror had receded, leaving behind a landscape of lingering unease, a landscape etched with the indelible marks of what they had witnessed, what they had endured.
Ethan found himself staring out the window, the familiar cityscape a muted canvas of grey and muted blues. The vibrant hues of his world seemed to have dulled, as if a veil had been drawn over everything. He traced the condensation on the glass with a fingertip, a phantom chill creeping up his arm. He remembered the raw, desperate energy that had coursed through him during those final moments, the frantic scramble for loopholes, the sheer, unadulterated will to survive. He had done it. They had all done it. But the victory felt hollow, a victory achieved at the cost of an innocence they could never reclaim.
Liam, usually a whirlwind of restless energy, was unnervingly still. He sat on the worn sofa, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere beyond the television screen, which remained stubbornly blank. His athletic build seemed to have shrunk, his shoulders perpetually hunched as if bracing for an unseen blow. The easy laughter that had once defined him was a distant memory, replaced by a quiet, almost haunted reserve. Ethan knew Liam’s nightmares had intensified, the shadowy figures from his subconscious now more vivid, more menacing. He’d tried to talk to him, to reach him, but Liam’s responses were clipped, his eyes darting away as if afraid to meet Ethan’s gaze, afraid of what he might see reflected there. The shared trauma had built a wall between them, a wall of unspoken fears and unspoken horrors.
