The scent of old paper and lemon polish clung to the air in the small, antique shop, a familiar perfume that had always signaled home to Carla. Now, it felt like a shroud, heavy with absence. Sunlight, dappled and soft through the lace curtains, illuminated dust motes dancing in the stillness where her mother’s laughter used to echo. Carla traced the cool, smooth surface of a mahogany desk, a piece her mother had always adored, her fingers lingering on the worn edges. Each object, each shadow, whispered of Isabella Rossi, of the vibrant life that had been so brutally extinguished.

A gentle chime above the door announced a visitor, jolting Carla from her melancholic reverie. She turned, her heart giving a little flutter of hope that perhaps, impossibly, it was her mother, just walked in from some errands. But it was a man, tall and impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit that seemed to absorb the light. His smile, when it bloomed, was as smooth and polished as the antique furniture surrounding them.

“Miss Rossi?” he inquired, his voice a low, resonant baritone that felt both comforting and, to Carla’s raw nerves, slightly intrusive. “I am Marcus Thorne. I… I knew your mother.”
