Chapter 9
A Glimmer of Hope
Elder Willow, with her keen observation, notices Mowe's distress and his furtive glances towards the ailing plants. She suspects he might hold a key to their salvation, though she doesn't know the full extent of his abilities.
Elder Willow watched Mowe from her usual spot beneath the dappled shade of the Great Berry Tree. His small, furry form was a knot of unease, his usually bright eyes darting from the wilting berry bushes to the worried faces of the villagers. He’d been like this for days, ever since the creeping sickness, the blight, had begun to steal the vibrant life from their beloved Berrywood. His secret. His strange, wonderful, terrifying secret. If they knew, what would they say? What would they do? He’d seen the way Bramble looked at anything different, the suspicion in his eyes. Mowe hugged himself, a tiny ball of dread.
“Mowe,” Elder Willow’s voice, like the rustle of dry leaves, drew his attention. She sat on a moss-covered stone, her face etched with wisdom and a deep, abiding sadness. Her gaze, though gentle, seemed to pierce right through his carefully constructed wall of normalcy. “You seem troubled, little one.”
