Chapter 8
The Secret's Weight
Torn between his fear and his compassion, Mowe wrestles with his secret. He knows his gift could save them, but the thought of revealing it fills him with trepidation and uncertainty.
The weight of his secret pressed down on Mowe, a heavy blanket woven from fear and a desperate, burgeoning hope. He sat hunched in his small cottage, the usual cheerful clutter of dried herbs and smooth stones now seeming to mock him. Outside, the wind moaned through the thinning leaves of Berrywood, a mournful sound that echoed the despair he’d heard in Bramble’s voice, in the hushed, fearful whispers of his neighbors. He could almost feel the Great Berry Tree’s own sorrow, a deep ache that resonated in his very bones.
His fingers traced the rough bark of a small, potted sapling on his windowsill. It was a foolish thing, this plant, a spindly sprout he’d rescued from the edge of the spreading blight. He’d brought it home, hidden it away, and then, with a tentative touch, coaxed a single, vibrant green leaf to unfurl. It was a small miracle, a secret he’d guarded for as long as he could remember, a gift that felt more like a burden with each passing day.
He replayed Elder Willow’s words in his mind. “Sometimes, Mowe, the greatest strength lies not in hiding, but in embracing what makes us unique.” Her gaze had been kind, knowing, but Mowe had flinched, his secret a hot ember under his skin. What if they didn’t understand? What if they saw him as strange, as something to be feared, just as he feared himself? The stories of those who were different, ostracized, whispered through the dark corners of his thoughts.
