Mowe’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs, a drumbeat of both terror and a burgeoning, unfamiliar courage. He’d seen the fear in Bramble’s eyes, heard the despair echo through the village square, and felt the weight of Elder Willow’s worried gaze. Each whispered word, each drooping leaf, had chipped away at his own fear, revealing something stronger beneath. Now, with the last rays of the afternoon sun painting Berrywood in hues of amber and rose, Mowe knew what he had to do. His gaze, usually downcast and shy, lifted and fixed on the distant, majestic silhouette of the Great Berry Tree.

It stood at the very heart of the village, a sentinel of ages, its branches reaching towards the heavens like gnarled, welcoming arms. But even from this distance, Mowe could see the sickness clinging to it. The vibrant, jewel-toned berries that usually pulsed with life were dull and shriveled. The broad, emerald leaves, once so lush and full, were tinged with a sickly brown, curling inward as if in pain. The Great Berry Tree, the very soul of Berrywood, was suffering. And Mowe, with his secret gift, was its only hope.

A tremor ran through him, not of fear this time, but of a deep, resonant connection. He felt the tree’s ache as if it were his own. He remembered sitting beneath its sprawling canopy as a youngling, listening to its rustling leaves tell stories older than time. He remembered the sweet, intoxicating scent of its ripening berries, a fragrance that filled the air of Berrywood and promised bounty. Now, that scent was fading, replaced by a faint, acrid tang of decay.
