Chapter 12
The Miracle Unfolds
To Mowe's relief and wonder, the bush responds. A faint green blush returns to its leaves, and a tiny bud begins to unfurl. The blight recedes slightly from his touch.
Mowe’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He’d expected… he didn’t know what he’d expected. Perhaps a flash of lightning, a rumble of thunder, or the very earth to swallow him whole. Instead, there was only the soft, almost inaudible hum of life responding to his touch. He held his breath, his gaze fixed on the shriveled berry bush. Beneath his trembling fingertips, a miracle, small and shy, began to unfold.
It started as a whisper of color, a faint blush of green returning to the leaves that had been the color of ash just moments before. Then, like a secret shared between the earth and the sun, a tiny bud, no bigger than a pinhead, began to unfurl. It was the most beautiful thing Mowe had ever witnessed. He could feel it, a faint thrum of energy flowing from his palms, chasing away the grey sickness that had clung to the bush like a shroud. The blight, it seemed, recoiled from his touch, a tangible wave of darkness receding from the hesitant return of life.
A shaky exhale escaped Mowe’s lips. It wasn’t a shout of triumph, or a dramatic flourish. It was a sound of profound relief, so potent it almost brought him to his knees. He hadn’t been struck down. The sky hadn’t fallen. And more importantly, the bush was responding. His secret, the very thing he’d guarded so fiercely, was not a curse, but a cure.
