Chapter 11
A Touch of Life
Mowe ventures out, his heart pounding. He approaches a small, blighted bush, takes a deep breath, and gently places his hand upon its withered leaves, channeling his hidden power.
Mowe’s paws trembled as he stepped out from the familiar shadow of his cozy burrow. The air, usually alive with the hum of busy insects and the sweet scent of blooming flowers, now carried a sickly, metallic tang. Every rustle of leaves, every creak of a branch, seemed to whisper of decay. His heart, a tiny drum against his ribs, beat a frantic rhythm of fear and a desperate, burgeoning resolve. He clutched the smooth, grey stone he always carried, its coolness a small comfort against the heat of his apprehension.
He looked towards the center of Berrywood, towards the Great Berry Tree. Its once magnificent crown, a cascade of emerald leaves dotted with plump, ruby-red berries, now sagged like a weary elder. Some branches were stark and skeletal, their leaves a brittle, dusty brown. A collective gasp had rippled through the village when the blight first began to show its insidious tendrils, and Mowe had felt it too, a cold dread seeping into his very roots. He knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that this was no ordinary sickness. This was something that threatened the very soul of Berrywood.
He remembered Elder Willow’s words from the previous evening, her voice a gentle balm on the village’s rising panic. “We must not despair,” she had said, her wise eyes scanning the worried faces. “There is always a way, if we are brave enough to seek it.” Mowe had listened, his own secret a heavy weight in his chest. His gift, the one he had always kept so carefully hidden, the one that made the smallest seed sprout and the most stubborn bud unfurl, felt like a dangerous burden now. What if they saw? What if they knew? The whispers, the stares, the fear… it was too much to bear.
