Chapter 10
The First Step
Driven by a surge of courage, Mowe decides he cannot stand idly by. He resolves to use his gift, even if it means risking his secret and facing the unknown consequences that may follow.
The air in Berrywood had grown heavy, not just with the scent of decay, but with the unspoken dread that clung to every drooping leaf and brittle stem. Mowe felt it in his whiskers, a prickling unease that mirrored the wilting despair settling over his home. He’d spent days watching, his heart aching with each new patch of sickly grey that spread across the once-vibrant foliage. He saw Bramble, his brow furrowed deeper than usual, shaking his head at a shriveled berry bush, and heard the hushed, fearful whispers of other villagers as they gathered their meager, failing harvests.
Elder Willow’s words echoed in his mind, her wise eyes holding a depth of understanding that both comforted and terrified him. “Sometimes,” she had said, her voice a gentle rustle of leaves, “the greatest strength lies not in hiding, but in the courage to reveal.” He had nodded, but the weight of his secret felt like a stone in his tiny chest. His gift, the very thing that made his fingers tingle with a silent, vibrant energy, was also his greatest fear. What would they think? What would they do if they knew Mowe, the quiet, unassuming mowe, could coax life from the earth with a mere touch?
He sat in his little burrow, the gloom outside seeping in through the entrance. A small, potted sprout, one he’d been nurturing, was beginning to show the tell-tale signs of the blight, its tiny leaves curling inwards, losing their hopeful green. He reached out a paw, his fur bristling with a familiar urge. He could feel the life within it, a faint pulse struggling against the creeping sickness. He could help it. He could make it strong again.
