The flickering gaslight of Elara’s cramped apartment cast long, dancing shadows that mirrored the disquiet churning within her. The Alchemist was gone. Not just gone, but *vanished*. Like smoke from a perfectly seared steak, he had dissipated, leaving only the faintest imprint of his genius and a tantalizing void. Her blog, her lifeblood, felt suddenly anemic, a pale imitation of the vibrant culinary world she’d once so confidently navigated. The Alchemist, in his brief, elusive communication, had hinted at a clandestine group, a society that guarded culinary secrets. Was this the key?

Tonight, as she reread the note for the hundredth time, a small, impossibly thin envelope, tucked beneath her doormat, caught her eye. It was made of thick, cream-colored paper, unaddressed, unfranked. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She snatched it up, her fingers trembling as she slid a fingernail under the flap. Inside, a single card, folded twice. The paper felt ancient, worn smooth by time and countless hands.
