Silas Thorne moved through the labyrinthine alleys of the Grand Bazaar like a predator. The air, thick with the competing perfumes of cardamom, saffron, and something vaguely metallic, did little to mask the acrid scent of his own impatience. He was a man accustomed to acquisition, to the swift, decisive claiming of what he desired. And what he desired now was the whispered-about, the legendary, the very thing that had eluded him for weeks: the secret ingredient of The Alchemist.
He cornered a spice merchant, a wizened man whose eyes darted like trapped sparrows. "The Sunstone Pepper," Silas stated, his voice a low growl that promised more than just displeasure. "You know of it."
The merchant wrung his hands, the bangles on his wrists clinking a nervous counterpoint. "Master Thorne, it is but a tale, a myth for children."
