The scent of lavender and old paper always greeted Samantha when she stepped into her grandmother Eleanor’s home. It was a familiar embrace, a comforting balm that usually settled her restless spirit. Today, however, the familiar aroma seemed to carry a faint undertone of something else, something akin to apprehension. She’d come with a question, a persistent hum in the back of her mind ever since she’d discovered the locked wooden chest in the attic of her childhood home. The chest, dark and heavy, had felt like a silent sentinel, guarding secrets she hadn’t even known existed. And Gregory, with his own shadowed past, had only amplified the mystery.
Eleanor, a woman whose silver hair was always neatly pinned and whose eyes held the wisdom of decades, was sitting in her favorite armchair by the bay window, sunlight dappling her delicate features. A half-finished knitting project lay in her lap, the needles poised as if awaiting instruction.
“Samantha, darling,” Eleanor said, her voice soft but clear, a melody Samantha had known since she was small. “What a lovely surprise. Come, sit. Have some tea.”
