The once vibrant greens had faded to a sickly ochre, the life-giving water now a sluggish, murky trickle. And the whispers, oh, the whispers. They had always been a comforting hum, a gentle murmur of secrets and stories carried on the wind. Now, they were a chorus of anguish, a desperate lament that clawed at Ryy’s heart.

She sat by the parched roots of what was once the grandest date palm, its fronds brittle and lifeless. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind, a blend of ancient wisdom and a heavy, unspoken fear. *“The desert does not forget, child. It remembers every promise, every slight.”* Ryy traced the cracked earth with a trembling finger, the dryness mirroring the desolation blooming within her. She had to go. The fragmented whispers, a desperate plea for balance, had coalesced into a single, undeniable directive: find the source, mend the broken pact.

A shadow fell over her, and Ryy looked up to see Kael standing there, his usual easy smile replaced by a grim concern. He carried a waterskin slung over his shoulder and a sturdy, well-worn pack. His eyes, usually bright with playful challenge, were now etched with a worry that mirrored her own.
