Chapter 7
Chapter 7
The narrator wakes the morning after the pulse's rhythm change and finds the town altered in subtle but unmistakable ways. At school, the pedagogas teaches a lesson about pressure and transformation in geological texts, his composure strained. Sarzaa appears at the cemetery fence singing a melody that carries a new, urgent quality. Beptotystes is found near the wolf grounds observing cracks in the earth that have appeared overnight. The narrator senses the pulse has settled into its new, longer interval and recognizes that the community's invisible network of attention has tightened. The chapter ends with the narrator noticing fresh marks on the path leading toward the school — boot prints too heavy and deliberate to belong to any local resident.
I did not sleep.
Not in the way sleep usually fails — the restless turning, the mind circling its own worries. This was different. My body lay still on the bed as though pinned by the weight of the air above it, and my awareness remained fixed on the floor, on the ground beneath the floor, on whatever was moving down there with its new, slower breath. The pulse had settled into its adjusted rhythm, the longer interval I had noticed at dusk, and it held through the night with the patience of something that understood time differently than we did. Not urgent. Not panicked. Patient the way winter is patient, the way frost is patient, pressing and pressing without variation until the thing it acts upon simply gives way.
When the first gray light crept into the window, I rose. The vibration was there immediately, rising through the soles of my bare feet on the cold floorboards, up through my ankles, my shins, settling into the base of my spine like a second heartbeat that had always been there and only recently announced itself. I dressed without hurry. Brushed no hair. Ate nothing. The routines of morning felt ceremonial now, gestures performed not out of need but out of fidelity to a pattern that still held the shape of normal life even as its content drained away.
