Chapter 6
Chapter 6 — The Scent of Resilience
The narrator returns to school the morning after the prokurorai's visit and finds the pedagogas altered but unbroken, teaching a lesson about persistence through a botanical text. Sarzaa appears near the school fence at midday, humming the earth's melody, and exchanges a brief glance with the pedagogas through the window that the narrator interprets as shared resolve. Beptotystes is encountered on the path home, pressing his boot to the ground and confirming the vibration has reached the fields. The narrator realizes the community's quiet awareness of the pulse is itself a form of connection and resistance. The chapter ends with the narrator sensing the vibration changing rhythm, something shifting deep below.
Morning arrived the way it always did in Jurbarkas during winter — not with light but with the gradual thinning of darkness, the sky trading one shade of gray for a slightly less opaque one, as though the sun had filed a request to be visible and been told to wait. I lay in bed and felt the floor through the frame, through the mattress, through the blanket pulled to my chin. The pulse was there. Had been there all night, probably, ticking beneath me while I slept, patient as a clock in an empty room.
I dressed and ate and walked to school by the usual route, but nothing about the walk felt usual. The air carried a density it had not carried before, not fog exactly, not frost, but a kind of atmospheric weight that made every sound arrive a half-beat later than expected, as though the world were echoing from somewhere deeper than the open sky.
The school building stood where it always stood, solid and institutional, its windows catching what little light the morning offered. Nothing about its exterior betrayed the visit of the previous evening — no marks, no notices, no evidence that two men in red caps had walked through those doors with their rigid faces and their questions that functioned as instruments of pressure. The building kept its secrets the way buildings do, behind plaster and glass and the accumulated silence of decades.
