Chapter 5
Chapter 5 — Roots Deepening
The narrator wakes to find the ground vibration stronger and more persistent. At school, the pedagogas teaches a lesson about roots and soil that carries veiled meaning about endurance and hidden strength. The narrator encounters Beptotystes working near the wolf grounds and observes him pressing his hand to the earth, confirming the vibration is felt by others. Sarzaa appears briefly at the cemetery fence, humming a melody the narrator recognizes as connected to something old and buried. Two prokurorai pass through town with unusual purpose, heading toward the school. The narrator senses the town's silence is shifting from passive endurance to active anticipation, and feels the underground pressure building toward a breaking point.
I woke before dawn. Not to a sound — there was no sound, not yet — but to the absence of one, the way silence changes texture when it is about to break. The room was black and cold, the window a gray rectangle barely distinguishable from the walls, and I lay still with my eyes open feeling the floorboards beneath my bed conduct something that was not quite warmth and not quite movement but lived somewhere between the two.
The vibration had followed me home.
No. That was wrong. It had not followed me anywhere. It had been here all along, beneath the foundation stones, beneath the cellar packed-earth floor, beneath the roots of everything built in this town. I had simply become attuned enough to feel it indoors now, through furniture, through the frame of the bed, through the soles of my feet even while lying down. What I had noticed first at the wolf grounds, then at the cemetery, had been seeping inward, following the same logic by which water finds the lowest point — except this was rising, not falling, pressing up rather than settling down.
