Chapter 4
Chapter 4 — Threads of Connection
The narrator wakes to a changed atmosphere in Jurbarkas after the prokurorai's school visit. The pedagogas teaches a lesson with veiled references to history erased and rewritten. Sarzaa appears at the edge of the market square and sings briefly, her voice carrying subversive meaning that the crowd absorbs without overt reaction. Beptotystes quietly warns the narrator to be careful. The narrator walks past the cemetery and wolf grounds at dusk, sensing the earth's restlessness intensifying. A moment of connection between the narrator and Sarzaa near the fence line suggests an emerging network of quiet resistance. The chapter ends with the ground pulsing more strongly than before, the narrator feeling that something beneath Jurbarkas is approaching a breaking point.
