Cynthia Dawes was your typical college grad. She achieved all of her goals. Great job. Nice home. Everyone she knew admired her. But, Cynthia had a problem that no one knew about. That problem was that she had unlimited, and unforeseeable access to The Veil. The world beyond the world. Cynthia constantly sees spirits that have passed on, and she can actively communicate with them. She mainly sees the spirit of her mother Thelma, and a long dead Native American man called Many Horses. She sees the spirit of her father Zeke from time to time, but he doesn't speak, only smiles. No one believes her, but her little brother Liam. When Cynthia and Liam were kids, they laid on the grass and prayed for something to eat, and candy rained from the sky just for them. But now as adults, The Veil is after Cynthia. Her power of foresight and manifestation is so great, that the darkest of dark entities want to harness it. The devil himself sends an emissary of violent proportions to try and break Cynthia. A demon named Astaroth, the most violent. Astaroth beats and tortures Cynthia day after day. But everyday, Cynthia heals. In a final desperate attempt, Astaro unleashes his full violence upon Cynthia. But his demonic attack awakens something special within Cynthia that even she didn't know she had. Cynthia transforms into a huge, blazing, lion, and takes Astaroth out with ease. With Astaroth sent back to hell, Cynthia resumes her daily routine. Her brother Liam pulls up to a scorched front yard, wondering what happened. Cynthia just says, "Dont worry about it. Problem solved".
Chapters
- 1Echoes in the Executive SuiteCynthia navigates the polished corridors of her successful career, the hum of fluorescent lights a stark contrast to the spectral whispers that follow her. Her mother, Thelma, a comforting presence with a surprisingly colorful vocabulary, drifts near, offering advice laced with endearments and profanity. Many Horses, a stoic Native American spirit, observes from the periphery, his ancient eyes holding a quiet understanding. Cynthia forces a smile during a board meeting, her mind miles away, trying to decipher the cryptic warnings from her spectral companions. Later, alone in her minimalist apartment, she confides in Liam, her younger brother. He listens intently, his belief a rare balm, recalling the impossible candy shower of their childhood. The weight of her secret presses down, the isolation a palpable entity in itself.
- 2The Cracks in RealityThe Veil, the world beyond the visible, begins to press in. Cynthia’s apartment, once a sanctuary, now feels permeable, shadows coalescing in the corners. The spirits of her mother and Many Horses appear more frequently, their forms shimmering with urgency. Cynthia feels a growing unease, a prickling sensation that she’s being watched, not by the familiar spirits, but by something colder, more avaricious. Her dreams become vivid battlegrounds, flashes of foresight showing dark tendrils reaching for her, seeking to ensnare her innate abilities of manifesting and foresight. Liam notices her increasing fatigue and the dark circles under her eyes, his concern deepening. He tries to offer comfort, but the true nature of the threat is beyond his comprehension, a creeping dread that something ancient and malevolent has taken notice of his sister.
- 3The Devil's EnvoyA palpable chill descends upon Cynthia's life, a malevolent presence that eclipses even the spectral visitors. Thelma’s spirit flickers, her usual sass replaced by a raw fear, while Many Horses stands guard, his spectral form tensed. Cynthia feels an overwhelming dread, a premonition of immense violence. Then, he arrives. Astaroth, a figure of pure, unadulterated brutality, materializes in her living room, his presence warping the air, the scent of brimstone acrid. He speaks with a voice like grinding stone, his eyes burning with a cruel, ancient hatred. His sole purpose is to break Cynthia, to shatter her spirit and claim her power for the infernal legions. He begins his onslaught, a terrifying display of raw, demonic force, leaving Cynthia reeling and broken.
- 4Scars That MendEach dawn brings a fresh wave of Astaroth's terror. Cynthia endures beatings that would obliterate a lesser being, her body torn and bruised, her mind pushed to its breaking point. Yet, with each sunrise, she heals, her wounds closing, her spirit reasserting its dominance. Thelma and Many Horses watch, their spectral forms vibrating with a fierce, protective energy. Cynthia’s resilience infuriates Astaroth. He escalates his torments, conjuring nightmarish visions, twisting her deepest fears into agonizing realities. He sees her power, her ability to recover, but he cannot comprehend its source. He pours his rage into each assault, desperate to find a weakness, unaware that his relentless attacks are forging Cynthia into something far greater than he anticipates, a crucible of pain forging an unstoppable will.
- 5The Roar of the DivineAstaroth, pushed to the brink of demonic fury by Cynthia's unyielding spirit, unleashes his ultimate assault. The force of his attack rips through Cynthia's very being, not breaking her, but tearing away the final veil of her human limitations. A blinding light erupts from her, a searing inferno that consumes her form. Where Cynthia stood, a magnificent, blazing lion now roars, its mane a corona of pure, celestial fire, its eyes burning with ancient power. Astaroth recoils, his demonic arrogance shattered by the sheer, overwhelming might of this divine manifestation. The battle is swift and decisive, the lion’s roar echoing with the power of creation, its claws tearing through Astaroth’s essence, banishing him back to the hells from whence he came.
- 6Order Restored, Scars RemainThe infernal stench of Astaroth's defeat dissipates, leaving behind the faint scent of ozone and scorched earth. Cynthia, now human again, stands amidst the wreckage of her living room, the fiery transformation leaving no physical trace, only a profound inner peace. The Veil recedes, its immediate threat neutralized. Later, Liam’s car pulls into the driveway, his eyes widening in disbelief at the blackened, smoking yard. He rushes to Cynthia, his voice laced with panic, demanding to know what happened. Cynthia, her expression calm, her eyes holding a new, profound wisdom, offers a simple, reassuring smile. "Don't worry about it, Liam," she says, her voice steady. "Problem solved."
- 7RebornCynthia Dawes had bested the most violent of evil. Her brother Liam was still worried about her. But all Cynthia needed was a stern talking to from her foul mouthed spirit of a mother, Thelma. As Cynthia lay on the bed, she sees her father. And for the first time, the spirit speaks. "Roof, stop being so hard on our girl! She did good! Get on over there, and give Cyn a hug!! That's our baby!!". The spirit of Thelma gently embraces Cynthia and Liam, saying " I'm proud of y'all. Y'all the elders now. Keep the family strong. Or I'll come back and make your heads roll like a Jhonny cake!!"
