Chapter 6

Order Restored, Scars Remain

The infernal stench of Astaroth's defeat dissipates, leaving behind the faint scent of ozone and scorched earth. Cynthia, now human again, stands amidst the wreckage of her living room, the fiery transformation leaving no physical trace, only a profound inner peace. The Veil recedes, its immediate threat neutralized. Later, Liam’s car pulls into the driveway, his eyes widening in disbelief at the blackened, smoking yard. He rushes to Cynthia, his voice laced with panic, demanding to know what happened. Cynthia, her expression calm, her eyes holding a new, profound wisdom, offers a simple, reassuring smile. "Don't worry about it, Liam," she says, her voice steady. "Problem solved."

The infernal stench of Astaroth’s defeat was a memory already fading, replaced by the sharp, sterile scent of ozone and the lingering, acrid perfume of scorched earth. Cynthia stood in the wreckage of what had once been her impeccably decorated living room, the charred remnants of furniture and splintered wood a stark testament to the inferno that had raged moments before. Yet, she felt no pain. The fiery transformation, the primal roar that had ripped from her throat, the sheer, unadulterated power that had surged through her veins – it had all vanished, leaving behind a profound, almost unnerving, inner peace. The Veil, that shimmering, terrifying curtain between worlds, seemed to have receded, its immediate, suffocating threat neutralized. She was human again, the colossal, blazing lion gone, replaced by the woman who had been so brutally tested. No physical trace of the battle remained on her skin, no burns, no wounds. Only a deep, resonant calm settled in her bones, a quiet certainty that had been absent for far too long.

She took a slow breath, the air still thick with the ghost of brimstone. It was done. That bastard Astaroth was gone, banished back to whatever festering pit he’d crawled from. She’d ripped him apart, atomized him with a power she hadn’t even known she possessed. It was a terrifying, exhilarating, and frankly, exhausting realization. She’d always known she was different, always known the whispers of the dead were real, always known Liam believed her when no one else would. But this… this was something else entirely. This was a power that dwarfed comprehension, a primal force that had been lying dormant within her, waiting for the right, goddamn stimulus.

A distant rumble vibrated through the soles of her feet. Liam. He was early. Or maybe just on time, her perception of time having been so thoroughly warped by the recent ordeal. She looked around the devastation, a flicker of her old, exasperated self surfacing. "Fuck me," she muttered, a wry smile touching her lips. "This is going to be a bitch to explain."
