Chapter 7
First Clues in the Archives
Randy discovers an ancient map fragment in the school's dusty archives, a potential lead to the Sword of Rana. This ignites his quest, facing immediate scrutiny from rivals.
The air in the Grand Archives was thick with the scent of ancient parchment and forgotten lore, a perfume that usually soothed my frayed nerves. Today, however, it did little to quell the gnawing anxiety in my gut. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom of the towering shelves, each one a tiny, silent testament to the centuries of knowledge locked away. My grandmother’s dying words echoed in my mind, a constant hum beneath the surface of my thoughts: “The sword of Rana will unlock your magic. Only you can control it. Keep doing good and you will find the sword.” Keep doing good. Easy for her to say. I was Randy, the magicless boy, the seventh hundredth student in a school of seven hundred prodigies, a walking contradiction in a place built on the very essence of magical power.
My fingers, calloused from countless hours of sword practice, traced the spines of leather-bound tomes. Most students avoided the Archives, finding them tedious and irrelevant to their flashy displays of arcane might. But for me, for the one without a spark of innate magic, these dusty relics were the only potential source of hope. My grandmother, bless her soul, had been a woman of quiet wisdom, her belief in me a beacon in the oppressive darkness of my own self-doubt. She’d spoken of the Sword of Rana not as a myth, but as a tangible artifact, a key to a power that lay dormant within me.
I’d been searching for days, sifting through forgotten scrolls and brittle maps, a needle in a haystack the size of a kingdom. The bullying had been worse than usual lately, fueled by the upcoming inter-school tournament. Katelyn, with her sharp tongue and even sharper ice magic, seemed to relish every opportunity to remind me of my inadequacy. Just yesterday, she’d conjured a blizzard in the mess hall, just to watch me shiver while everyone else basked in warmth. And Lyra, with her calculating eyes and a smile that never quite reached them, was always lurking, her observations more like veiled threats.
