The air in the Grand Hall, usually thick with the scent of old parchment and crackling arcane energy, felt unusually stagnant today. It was the kind of stillness that precedes a storm, a quiet that made the hairs on the back of my neck prickle. I was supposed to be in advanced swordplay practice, honing the muscle memory my grandmother had so desperately wanted me to cultivate, but my feet had carried me here instead, drawn by an invisible current. The Grand Hall was a place of hushed reverence, a sanctuary where the portraits of past Headmasters and legendary magic wielders seemed to watch with ancient, knowing eyes. It was also a place where one could be most alone, even amidst the sprawling grandeur of the King of Magic’s mansion.

From my usual shadowed alcove, I watched the stream of students flow past, their robes a kaleidoscope of colors, their laughter and chatter a constant hum. Most of them barely glanced my way, a ghost in their vibrant world. They were the gifted, the chosen, their very essence thrumming with the magic that was so conspicuously absent in me. I was Randy, the magicless anomaly, the seventh hundredth student in a school teeming with hundreds of prodigies. My existence was an inconvenience, a statistical oddity that drew the ire of some and the pity of others.

Then there was Lyra.
