Chapter 8
Glimmers in the Gloom
My powers spark erratically in this alien realm. Initial panic gives way to burning rage as I confront the reality of my dimensional displacement. Where am I?
The air tasted like dust and regret, a metallic tang that clung to my tongue and throat. My powers, usually a humming, vibrant symphony within me, felt like a broken radio, crackling with static and sputtering out at random intervals. One moment, a surge of energy would thrum through my veins, ready to shatter mountains, the next, a weakness would seize me, leaving me trembling and vulnerable. This wasn't my world. The sky was a bruised purple, streaked with sickly green clouds that writhed like tormented spirits. Panic, cold and sharp, began to prickle at the edges of my consciousness. Where was I? How did I get here? The last thing I remembered was… nothing. A blank, terrifying void. The memory refused to coalesce, leaving me adrift in a sea of confusion. Then, the rage. It wasn’t a conscious decision, but a primal scream from the depths of my being. Rage at this alien landscape, at the malfunction of my own body, at the sheer, unadulterated unfairness of it all. I wanted to scream, to shatter the oppressive silence, to burn this entire dimension to ash with the inferno building within me.
My fists clenched, knuckles white. I needed to get a grip. I needed to understand. With a desperate surge of will, I focused inward, trying to command the chaos. *Freeze time.* The command echoed in my mind, a desperate plea. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. My breath hitched, a sob catching in my throat. Then, a ripple. A tremor. The writhing clouds stilled, the pulsing moss beneath my feet dimmed. The world around me snapped into an unnatural, crystalline stillness. I was still here, in this godforsaken place, but for a precious few moments, I had a semblance of control.
