The air in the dilapidated tower, once a monument to my ignoble reign, now hummed with a different kind of silence. It was the quiet of neglect, of dust motes dancing in the slivers of light that pierced the crumbling masonry, a stark contrast to the cacophony of my past life, both the one I’d lost and the one I’d been forced into. I watched her, Lyra, from the shadows of a collapsed archway, the faint glow of her healing magic illuminating the grime-caked surfaces. She moved with a hesitant grace, her eyes, wide and intelligent, taking in the decay with a mixture of apprehension and a curious, almost analytical, interest.

This was not the reaction I had anticipated. Players, the ones who had stormed these halls with righteous fury and bloodlust, would have recoiled, their faces contorted with fear and disgust. They saw me, Kaelen, the ‘Crimson Scourge,’ the ‘Dread Lord,’ the apex predator of their digital playground. They saw the accolades, the bounty, the final boss. They did not see the man who had woken up in this gilded cage, a prisoner of a system he couldn’t comprehend, burdened by the weight of a life he hadn’t lived and a villainy he hadn’t chosen.

Her healer’s aura, usually a beacon of warmth, seemed to flicker around her, a nervous energy emanating from her very being. And then, I had acted. A flicker of instinct, a spark of something that felt achingly like my former self. When the skeletal guardians, animated by the lingering malice of the tower, had lunged, I hadn’t unleashed my programmed fury. Instead, I had shielded her. A crude, almost clumsy, gesture. My gauntleted hand had swept out, a barrier of pure, unadulterated will, deflecting the spectral claws that would have rent her flesh.
